Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - If you take 4th street often, you may want to find your own detour. Reconstruction is set to begin Monday on the Rochester roadway between 1st Ave SW and 6th Ave SW.

Various traffic detours will be put in place throughout the reconstruction, and at times the entire roadway will be closed, which includes the first stage of the reconstruction, which will close 4th Street SW between 1st Ave SW and 3rd Ave.

Pedestrians will be detoured to one side of the street during the duration of the project for the construction of new sidewalks. Several RPT bus routes, commuter buses, and shuttle bus service will be impacted.

They will be adding amenities including a protected bicycle facility in the city, which places the bike lane between the parked cars and the sidewalk, with a 3‐foot striped buffer between the bike facility and parking lane. There will be an increased number of on-street parking spots and pavement markings will be enhanced to make bikers more visible to vehicles.

The project also includes an upgrade to the sanitary sewer capacity in the downtown and replacing a water main that was constructed over 100 years ago.

The $5.4 million project is expected to be done by Oct. 31, 2018.
