Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - A Rochester fighter was able to save a dog after it broke through the thin ice on Cascade Lake this morning.

A news release says the fire department responded to the lake about 11:45 AM and found the dog was in the frigid water in a hole in the ice about 50 feet from the shore. A firefighter put on ice rescue personal protection gear and was able to reach the dog and assist the animal out of the water and back onto the ice.

The call to rescue dog came from the pet owners, who indicated it had been in the water for about 10 minutes. A fire department spokesman noted the pet owners were very wise to call for assistance early and for not attempting to venture out onto the ice themselves.
