Five communities in southeastern Minnesota are among the 32 cities throughout the state that will receive a portion of more than $19 million in Small Cities Development Program grants this year.

The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development earlier announced 10 of the grants and on Friday awarded another 22, which included the southeastern Minnesota cities. The federal grants can be used to pay for rehabilitating housing and commercial buildings as well as updating public infrastructure. The projects must be completed within 30 months of the awarding of the funding.

“As Minnesota’s economy recovers from COVID-19, these grants help small communities in Greater Minnesota make critical improvements to their housing and public infrastructure,” said DEED Commissioner Steve Grove. “These are important investments in cities and towns across the state to help them thrive and grow.”

The grants awarded in this region, which totaled more than $2.7 million, are listed below.

  • Pine Island received $513,475 for owner-occupied housing rehabilitation.
  • West Concord/Claremont received $594,550 for owner-occupied housing rehabilitation.
  • Waseca received $345,000 for owner-occupied housing rehabilitation.
  • La Crescent received $552,000 for owner-occupied housing rehabilitation.
  • Hokah received $721,625 for owner-occupied housing, rental and commercial rehabilitation.
