It definitely feels like more and more industries are asking for tips. Whether you feel you should actually tip them or not and how much is a whole other thing. But when you do tip, how much do you typically leave?

I wanted to know if Minnesotans are typically good tippers or not, so I went on the hunt.

Servers: Tip at least between 15-20%

Picking up food from a restaurant or a barista: a few bucks and up to 15%

Rideshare drivers: same as servers, 15-20%

Hair stylist: also 15-20%

In general, 20% is usually a solid place to be tipping-wise. They get more into the weeds about less common professions that may ask for a tip if you're interested.

So how are we Minnesotans at tipping?

Are Minnesotans Good Tippers?

According to a study from a website called Minimum Wage, Minnesotans are decent at tipping but actually a bit on the low end compared to many other states.

This was based on 2024 stats and it shows that in Minnesota we typically tip around 19.3%. The national average is 19.8%, so not too bad!

But there are many states that tip better than us. We're actually number 39 out of the 50 states when it comes to tipping. However, many of the other states only tip better than us by point some percent.

Delaware, on average, tips the most at 21.5%.
