Imagine walking out your front door one morning and being greeted by a 9-foot-long snake in your yard. No thank you! That's what I imagine happened to a poor person in Iowa recently.

Police were contacted early last week about a snake in the front yard of their home in Cedar Rapids. An officer responded to the call and probably didn't expect to encounter a snake quite this size!

They named him Sir Hiss-a-lot, and he got quite a lot of attention on social media.

Sir Hiss-a-lot was taken to Cedar Rapids Animal Care and Control (CRACC) to keep him and the public safe and to determine what to do with him next.

After some research, CRACC found out that Sir Hiss-a-lot is a reticulated python, which is illegal to own as a pet in Iowa. However, they continued the hunt for an owner in case he had gone missing.

While it's possible that Sir Hiss-a-lot may have escaped an enclosure, UPI writes that he may have also been dumped.

Animal Care Manager Rae Smith spoke with The Gazette newspaper about the incident and said,

"We can't confirm for sure if the python was abandoned, as it's entirely possible that it may have escaped some type of enclosure ... But there is potentially some suspicion that it was abandoned, because in my experience, this is a rather common thing for people to do [when] they can no longer care for them."

Regardless of how Sir Hiss-a-lot came to be in that front yard, no one came forward to claim him. He did, however, provide lots of entertainment for people online and provided some teaching moments, like this one:

On Saturday, Sir Hiss-a-lot made his departure from CRACC and made his way to his new home in Illinois.

Rae Smith said that Sir Hiss-a-lot "will now be cared for by a partner organization, which she did not identify due to privacy concerns."
