Coast Guard Shares Video Rescuing 4 Children On Lake Superior
It was definitely a scary evening for these four children who found themselves stranded on an island in Lake Superior. The kids were paddleboarding when their paddles floated away, and they had no way to get to shore.
WDIO reports that a call came in at 8:05 PM that four children were stranded on a small rock in Lake Superior near Silver Bay. The girls, ages 8, 10, 13, and 14, were paddleboarding off of Black Beach on Lake Superior when they ended up on a small rocky island without their paddles.
Sherrif Deputies reached the rock with a watercraft, where they made contact with the children, and Lake County Rescue was they able to use a rope system to deliver blankets and food to the kids. However, waves and dangerous conditions would not allow a watercraft rescue.
Authorities called in the Coast Guard to assist from Traverse City Air Rescue station.
The Coast Guard received the call shortly after 9 pm. The MH-60 helicopter flew across Lake Michigan, the Upper Peninsula, and Lake Superior to reach the North Shore. All 4 girls were hoisted to safety around 1 AM.
