Watch Explosives Bring Down Old Iowa Bridge [VIDEO]

A piece of Iowa history for more than 80 years was brought down in just seconds over the weekend.

Sunday (August 27), the old Interstate-74 bridge, connecting Iowa and Illinois over the Mississippi River in the Quad Cities, was imploded by the Iowa Department of Transportation using controlled explosives.

The westbound bridge dates back to 1935. The eastbound bridge opened in 1960.

Demolition of the bridge began in June the Iowa DOT started removing parts of the old bridge.

Increased traffic in the area made the old bridge obsolete.

It was replaced by a new bridge in December of 2021.
