Ex Rochester Daycare Worker Accused of Abusing Infants Avoids Prison Sentence

Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News)- A former Rochester daycare worker has avoided prison time for her conviction in a child abuse case.

26-year-old Alexis Kemp of Rochester was charged last June with two felony counts of malicious punishment of a child.

She pleaded guilty to both counts in a plea deal she entered in May. Under the terms of the agreement, the prosecution agreed to recommend a maximum 60-day jail sentence.

Ex Rochester Daycare Worker Sentenced for Conviction in Infant Abuse Case

The charges stemmed from an investigation by Rochester police into reports of child abuse by an employee of New Horizons Academy in northwest Rochester. The victims in the case are infants, according to the court document.

Police saw bruising on the small child’s left shoulder blade, spine, and right shoulder blade, the complaint says. 

A review of security camera footage shows Kemp picking up the little girl, slamming her face down into the crib then forcefully hitting the child’s back with an open hand, the charges say.

Kemp was also seen forcing the baby’s head into a pillow while the child was laying face-down. 

The complaint says investigators also saw a second incident of abuse during their review of footage captured on May 29. 

Kemp was seen grabbing a one-year-old girl by the leg and pulling forcefully, which caused the infant to twist, fall backwards and smack her on the floor, the court document says.

Kemp told police she was overwhelmed by the victim crying during naptime, according to the complaint. 

On Monday Kemp was sentenced to 60 days in jail and five years probation. She’s been ordered to report to the Olmsted County Jail by August 3.
