Minneapolis, MN (KROC-AM News) - Hundreds of Minnesota military veterans may have been affected by a data breach involving a contractor for the US Department of Veterans Affairs

According to the Minneapolis Veterans Affairs Health Care System, 616 veterans in the state are being notified that their private health information was potentially compromised in a nationwide data breach. Just over 2300 veterans throughout the US were impacted by the cyber attack.

A statement from the agency indicates the private health information managed by a medical transcription company called DBP Inc. was encrypted and possibly stolen by hackers. The data included the full names, medical record information, and Social Security numbers of the impacted veterans.

The VA says steps have been taken in an effort to prevent future data breaches and the agency is working with the contractor to increase its security measures.
