30-year-old Adam Fravel faces first and second-degree murder charges in connection with the death of the 27-year-old Winona woman, who was the mother of his two children. Kingsbury vanished in late March of last year and her body was found in June near a remote rural road in Fillmore County.

The prosecution focused on physical evidence tying Fravel to the crime, as well as testimony from friends and family members, who described a relationship that included physical violence. Fravel's defense attorney countered that the investigation was myopic and targeted his client without considering other possibilities.

The trial was moved from Winona to Mankato due to the extensive pretrial publicity surrounding the case, which included international headlines about Maddie's disappearance and the numerous search efforts that took place prior to the discovery of her body not too far from the home of Fravel's parents in Mabel.
