Search teams found the submerged boat and body of the boater in the Superior Entry, which is southeast of Duluth. The preliminary investigation indicates the victim was on the water with a friend Saturday night.
He dropped his friend off at a dock around 11:30 p.m. then returned to the water to spend the night as he often does, the news release says.
Authorities say evidence and debris found at the scene indicated a “significant collision” involving the victim’s 21-foot Maxum boat took place. Investigators believe a current took the boat away from the collision scene and to the location where it was found.
The watercraft is currently in 40 feet of water and authorities are planning to bring it to the surface later this week.
Authorities identified the boat collision victim as 57-year-old William Linster. His cause of death is pending the results of an autopsy, the news release says.
