Expect Delays at This Busy Rochester Highway 52 Interchange

Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - Motorists who use one of the busiest interchanges along Highway 52 in Rochester are being advised that they may experience traffic congestion, particularly during peak travel hours, because of changes made on Friday.

Why traffic congestion is expected

The Minnesota Department of Transportation says the changes involve the lanes at the exit ramp from southbound Highway 52 onto 2nd Street Southwest. There is now one lane available for left turns and one lane for through traffic to 6th Street Southwest, and one lane for right turns. The change removed one of the left-turn lane options that was shared with the middle lane for through traffic.

LINK construction continues at 2nd Street interchange

A MnDOT news release says congestion can be expected during peak travel times and is expected to continue during construction involving the new Rochester LINK Bus Rapid Transit system. Motorists are being advised to plan for extra time if they plan to travel through the intersection on the west side of the 2nd Street Southwest overpass.

According to MnDOT, the change in the turn lanes is expected to be in place for approximately one month.

More lane changes coming next month

The LINK Bus Rapid Transit project is also expected to require other turn-lane changes next month as the work impacts other sections of the 2nd Street interchange. Look for future announcements regarding those changes in advance of the work.
