Mazeppa Man Sentenced: 2 Years for $20K Theft in Oronoco Burglary

Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - A Mazeppa man has been sentenced to two years in prison for a conviction stemming from a burglary at a Rochester storage business earlier this year.

37-year-old Travis Lane Hansen was also ordered to pay nearly $19,000 in restitution, but he is being allowed to serve the prison time concurrently with a three-year prison sentence he was given for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon in Wabasha County. In that case, 11 firearms and hallucinogenic mushrooms were found on his property in Wabasha County during the execution of a search in April.

That same search led to the charges connected to the burglary in Rochester. The criminal complaint says investigators found several items reported stolen from the storage business at the farm where the firearms were discovered. The court document also indicates that video recorded by surveillance cameras at the storage business linked Hansen to the crime.

It says he and another man, identified as 45-year-old Andreas Maxwell Schmidt of Rochester, allegedly took two dirt bikes and other items from a storage unit that the facility in the early morning hours of both March 26 and March 27. Schmidt was arrested as he was leaving the property in his truck.

Hansen was originally charged with two counts of third-degree burglary, two counts of felony theft, and a misdemeanor theft charge. He entered a guilty plea on Wednesday to a single count of felony theft in exchange for the dismissal of the other charges.

Court records show Hansen has a lengthy criminal history and multiple southeastern Minnesota Counties dating back to 2007. It includes multiple convictions on felony burglary, theft, and drug charges.

Schmidt is currently scheduled to stand trial next spring. He is charged with third-degree burglary and felony theft.
