The Minnesota State Patrol was among agencies that responded to the chain-reaction crash in the right lane of Interstate 94 West at the junction with Hwy. 101 in Rogers. The state crash report identifies the deceased motorist as 42-year-old Miguel Perez of Brooklyn Center and his passenger as 19-year-old Gabriel Lara from Monticello.

Perez was pronounced dead at the scene while Lara was taken to a hospital with what were described as life-threatening injuries. The two were in a 2016 Izuzu NPR truck. The report says it’s unknown if Perez was wearing his seatbelt. Lara was reportedly buckled up.

Investigators are still working on determining what led to the deadly chain-reaction crash. The preliminary report indicates a collision in the right lane set off the chain reaction shortly before 3 p.m. No other injuries were reported.
