12-Year-Old Girl Rescued, 56-Year-Old Disappears in Incident on Mississippi River Sandbar
The call came from the area of the sandy point of Long Point, which is north of Lake City.
Witnesses told first responders a 12-year-old girl had gotten into the water with a 56-year-old man, who authorities describe as a close friend of the girl’s family.
The two were walking along a sandbar when the girl was suddenly seen flailing her arms in distress, the news release says.
A nearby boat drove over to the area the girl was seen and pulled her from the water after she had become submerged. Authorities say she was not injured.
Witnesses told deputies the 56-year-old man went under water and never resurfaced.
Multiple local and state agencies swarmed the area for search, which included a drone, but did not find the missing swimmer, the news release says.
On Sunday afternoon authorities said the multi-agency search remained ongoing and is being conducted with “specialized water search and recovery resources.” The man’s name has not been released.
