Rochester Man Gets Probation in $125K Elder Theft Case
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - A Rochester man has been sentenced for his involvement in the theft of more than $125,000 from a vulnerable elderly man.
Thirty-six-year-old Corey Keigher and his wife were charged in December 2022 as a result of an investigation launched by the Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office earlier that year. The now-divorced couple was accused of writing checks to themselves from the bank account of an 81-year-old man after 37-year-old Colleen Silverling-Keigher was granted Power of Attorney for the victim.

Court records indicate the investigation began after the Sheriff’s Office received a vulnerable adult maltreatment report. It stated that the victim had been living in a secure memory care facility in Rochester for more than two years and outlined suspicions that the couple were making cash withdrawals from ATMs and cashing checks that were not in the victim’s best interests.
The criminal complaints filed against the couple say they told investigators that the funds had been used to clean up and repair the victim’s home, but they were unable to provide any documentation of those expenses. Silverling-Keigher also stated that an attorney had advised her to pay herself $25 per hour for time spent on activities associated with her Power of Attorney duties.

According to the charges, the couple admitted using some of the funds to purchase new tires for a camper and nearly $4,000 worth of jewelry. They also claimed they were repaying the money to the victim, but did not provide any documentation to support that claim.

Both were charged with two felony counts of aiding and abetting financial exploitation of a vulnerable adult. Corey Keigher entered a guilty plea in March to one count. He has been sentenced to two years on probation and has been ordered to share in paying nearly $80,000 in restitution.
His wife earlier admitted to one of the felony charges against her and was sentenced to five years on probation.
