Strike Authorization Vote Scheduled For 15,000 Minnesota Nurses
St. Paul, MN (KROC-AM News) - The leaders of the union representing the 15,000 Minnesota nurses who went on strike in September are preparing for another possible work stoppage.
The Minnesota Nurses Association today announced that a strike authorization vote will be held on November 30. If approved by a two-thirds majority of the union nurses, the vote would authorize the union leadership to call a strike after giving the 15 affected hospitals a 10-day notice.
The 15,000 nurses working for hospitals in the Twin Cities, Duluth, and Superior Wisconsin staged a three-day work stoppage in September in an effort to bolster their negotiating position in ongoing contract talks. It was described as the largest private-sector nurses' strike in the history of the US.
Since then, the union nurses have been working at their jobs while negotiations with the hospitals continue. The two sides began their contract negotiations in March. The nurses represented by the union in the Twin Cities have been working without a contract since the end of May, while the contract for the nurses in the Duluth area expired at the end of June.
