If you know anyone that suffers from a food allergy in Minnesota, you KNOW that life can be challenging.  The FDA has had 8 foods in the allergy spotlight for quite some time but now, a 9th food is being added to the list.

List of Major Food Allergies Is Expanding on January 1st, 2023

A few years ago, I found out the hard way that soy was causing me a ton of issues.  My tongue was swollen, I kept breaking out in hives, and Benadryl was my new friend.  At that point, reading labels and being aware of what foods are prepared safely for me became a way of life.  Today, I am SOOOO thankful for food labels.  I just wish there was less soy in all of the food on Minnesota store shelves.

I'm not alone.  According to aafa.org, 32 million people in the U.S. have food allergies.  Just over 10% of U.S. adults have food allergies which is about 26 million people.  When you look at the number of kids impacted by food allergies, there are close to 5.6 million suffering throughout the U.S.

Right now, there are 8 major food allergies that impact individuals and they include the following:

As of January 1st, 2023, sesame will be included in the top allergen food list.

 This law identified eight foods as major food allergens: milk, eggs, fish, Crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, and soybeans. Eight foods are identified as major food allergens. Under the FASTER Act of 2021, sesame is being added as the 9th major food allergen effective January 1, 2023. - FDA.gov
