Did You Know That The Popular Rainforest Cafe Got Its Start In Minnesota

Back in the mid-1990s, a restaurant that provided entertainment and great food flooded the United States.  But did you know that the first Rainforest Cafe was actually in a house in Minneapolis?  Ok...they weren't serving up food to massive crowds but the thunderstorms were happening!

Founder of Rainforest Cafe, Steven Schussler, shared with Fortune magazine that the first prototype for this "eatertainment" was his house.  He used 3,700 extension cords to power sound systems, lights, and fog pumps for the creation that he made to show potential investors.

Is It True That Rainforest Cafe Used To Have Live Animals?

It IS true!  According to atlasobscura.com, the robotic gorilla wasn't the only animal that could be spotted at a Rainforest Cafe.  In its early days, an array of live animals could be viewed at the restaurants.  That all changed in 2000.

Landry's Restaurants Inc. purchased Rainforest Cafe and when the line item of live birds was shown to be $100,000 for each location, the live animal feature was eliminated.

Here Is Where You Can Find One Of The Last Rainforest Cafes in the United States

According to Chowhound, at its height, Rainforest Cafe had 59 restaurants!  The last few decades, the allure of a Rainforest Cafe still exists but the locations have dwindled substantially.  Now, there are just 16 locations left in the United States, including one in the state where it all began, Minnesota.
