This ‘New’ Grape Variety Just Showed Up at a Rochester Hy-Vee — And It Tastes Out of This World”
I have been shopping for groceries for a few decades now...I am well aware of what items are in the produce section. As I was getting a few items on my list last night, I noticed something new that I have never seen before in my life! If you haven't seen it...or tried it...I'll fill you in on the "new"ish produce I saw at a Hy-Vee store in Rochester, Minnesota.

Spotted in Rochester: New Type of Produce at Hy-Vee
I've had a crazy work schedule this week and when I was finally leaving work at 6:30 pm, I realized my family probably didn't get anything ready for a meal. I was right. Thankfully, Hy-Vee on 37th Street is on my way home so I stopped by to pick up a pizza. When I walked in, I saw a new type of produce I've never seen in all my years of shopping - Moon Drop grapes.
What Are Moon Drop Grapes?
I know what a grape looks like, and I can tell you, what I was staring at in the produce section at Hy-Vee was not a normal grape. They looked a bit like enlarged Mike and Ike's.

After I left the store, I did a bit of digging in the world of online information (aka - the internet) and found a few fun facts about my new discovery. Moon Drop grapes are:
- seedless
- sweeter and with a more intense grape flavor than other black grapes
As Simply Recipes stated, "these odd-looking grapes have a flavor that can't be beat."
Before 2004, these grapes didn't even exist. Today, they are sold as Moon Drop®” or “Sweet Sapphire™. Not all stores carry them, but if they do, they should show up on store shelves from late summer into fall.
