Delta Airlines To Start Offering Free Perk On Minnesota Flights
Most airlines are taking away free perks, not adding them
It's not often that you see an airline add a new, free perk. In fact, most airlines are doing the opposite, and are now making you and I pay for the things we *used* to get for free. (Like checked bags, seats with more legroom and various other comforts, am I right?)
That's why I was a little surprised to read about what Delta Airlines will be rolling out soon. They're actually going to be offering Wi-Fi wireless internet service for all passengers aboard all their planes, including those flying in and out of Minnesota.
And, it's going to be free!
Delta Airlines just announced their new free perk
According to this story from the Thrifty Traveller, a Minnesota-based travel industry site, Delta CEO Ed Bastian made the announcement earlier this week during the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.
"Wi-Fi will be free on Delta across our entire company. It's going to be free, it's going to be fast, and it's going to be available for everyone," Bastian was quoted as saying in the Thrifty Traveller story. "It doesn't matter what price you paid for your seat," he noted in the story.
While the new in-flight Wi-Fi service will indeed be free on Delta flights, you will still need to have a Delta Sky Miles account, however. But, the Thrifty Traveler site noted that opening a Sky Miles account will also be free, and can be accomplished in just a few minutes.
When will you be able to use Delta's new free Wi-Fi?
The new service is slated to start February 1st and will be initially rolled out on about 80% of all Delta flights. Delta said it hopes to have the rest of its fleet outfitted with the necessary equipment to offer free Wi-Fi by the end of the year.
It's a process that Delta first talked about doing back in 2018, and this announcement means they're the first of the Big Four American airlines (including Delta, United, Southwest and American) to offer the service for free.
This is the second big piece of news from Minnesota's biggest airline this week. Earlier, Delta was named the Most On-Time Airline in North America, as well. Delta merged with Minneapolis-based Northwest Airlines back in 2008. Northwest was one of those brands that were once huge here in Minnesota (kind of like Dayton's also was) but that now no longer exists. Which is the same for many of the following famous brands.
