Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The Mayo Clinic says a former employee was responsible for a privacy breach affecting over 1600 patients.

A statement issued by the Mayo Clinic today says 1131 of the affected patients are in Minnesota and an investigation concluded it was a case of inappropriate access by one employee who is no longer with the Mayo Clinic. The statement says the former employee may have viewed information about the name of the patient, demographic information, date of birth, medical record number, clinical notes, and in some cases images. Social Security numbers, payment card information, or bank account numbers were not accessed.

An investigation by Mayo has found no evidence that any data was printed or otherwise retained by the ex-employee, and because no financial data was involved, the patients impacted by the unauthorized access to the records do not need to take any action. The statement says the investigation into the privacy breach continues in an effort to ensure that all affected patients are identified. Mayo is sending them mailed notification letters that contain additional information.
