Minnesota’s REAL ID Requirement is Starting
You've probably heard about REAL IDs by now. Minnesota officials have been talking about the new form of identification and urging residents to upgrade for several years now. Well, we've reached the deadline (May 7th, 2025) and many people, including myself, are still rockin' an old-school driver's license.
Don't worry, you're not in trouble, but there are some things you should know.
What Is a REAL ID?
The REAL ID Act was passed by Congress twenty years ago in 2005 and allowed the Federal Government to “set standards for the issuance of sources of identification, such as driver's licenses and identification cards.”

Homeland Security says without the new ID people won't be allowed to do certain things that up until now did not require a special form of identification.
If your ID has a star in the top corner, you've already got a REAL ID. Congrats. If it doesn't, you'll need to update your form of ID.
How Do Minnesotans Get a REAL ID?
Head to the same place you got your driver's license and bring along original documents proving your identity, date of birth, legal U.S. presence, and two proofs of your Minnesota residency. You can pre-apply online to save time and potentially receive your REAL ID in as little as 7-10 business days.
Do Minnesotans Need a REAL ID?
Your normal driver's license is still going to work for things like operating a vehicle or buying beer at the corner store, but the REAL ID will be required to board planes. So if you're planning on traveling this summer you might want to upgrade as soon as possible.
Minnesotans can apply for a REAL ID or Enhanced ID. The major difference is the enhanced ID allows you to cross the border on land or sea while the REAL ID requires additional documentation. (Both work great for flying).
