Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - Mother Nature has refused to cooperate and now the Rochester School District has given up on holding a ceremonial groundbreaking ceremony for the community's new middle school.

The district this afternoon announced it has canceled the event, which had been scheduled to take place on Wednesday because the site "will not be fit for guests and traffic." The property in far northwest Rochester was blanketed by the snow that fell across the region on Sunday and is expected to be very muddy for at least a few days. In announcing the decision, a school district spokesperson noted, We did not anticipate winter arriving so quickly this year.”

The groundbreaking was originally scheduled to take place last Wednesday, but that event was postponed because of the snowstorm that hit southern Minnesota on Tuesday. The Middle School project is among the numerous construction projects that were approved by school district voters last November.
