Our Big Camping Trip and Some Tips
I promised my kids that when I completed my Bachelors degree I would take them on a fun vacation. Of course I would pick an adventure that I have zero experience in - camping. As a single parent I do want to show my daughters that they can do anything. But before we go, I did some recon and research. I don't know how to start a fire on my own, pitch a tent and what in the world do you make over the fire except for s'mores? We can't live on s'more the entire time....or maybe we can. Hehehe
Needless to say my trip to the store was interesting. I picked up some necessities that friends had suggested and as I was browsing the shelves, I found this nifty vest. I dubbed it my "camping vest" until people pointed out that it was a FLY FISHING VEST. Either way, I am wearing it. I figure I can put all my camping gear inside the pockets. And one pocket is reserved for twizzlers.
So if you're like me and want to do something out of your comfort zone, like camp - here's some great advice friends shared with me.
- 1
Bring a lighter
Why make it challenging to start a fire with a couple of sticks? Just bring a large lighter to start it.
- 2
Pie Irons
I had no idea these existed! Use a pie iron to make just about anything! French toast, pizza, you name it! Here's some recipes.
- 3
Scramble eggs and freeze 'em
Want an easy breakfast? Scramble eggs the night before, freeze them up and cook them over the fire.
- 4
Recycle Laundry Detergent jug
Recycling a laundry detergent jug into a hand washing/dish washing area! Fill it up with soap and water - you're all set to clean!
- 5
Keep firewood in car
This keeps the wood dry in case it rains. Nothing worse than wet firewood and not being able to have a fire!
