Close to 40 million Americans will travel 50 or more miles from home during the Memorial Day holiday weekend. Don't let a traffic ticket ruin your good times.

The Minnesota State Patrol, South Dakota Highway Patrol and other law enforcement agencies are planning a 22-hour extra enforcement operation called "Joint I-90 Safety Operation."  It is scheduled to start at  6 a.m. on Friday, May 27.

The goal of the campaign is to keep motorists safe.

Col. Matt Langer, Chief of the Minnesota State Patrol, said “You can avoid a ticket — and a crash — if you simply buckle up, drive at safe speeds, pay attention and drive sober.”

Troopers will be looking for speeders, hazardous moving violations, seat belt use and impaired driving. The operation also includes use of patrol aircraft.

The Joint I-90 Safety Operation will focus on I-90 from the Wyoming border to the Wisconsin border, but troopers will also will be patrolling other state and county roads in the area.

  • Now, Some Memorial Day Fun...

Even though I-90 will be filled with speed traps during this long holiday weekend, there are also some run reasons to look forward to Memorial Day. Grilling, for one!
