Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - The criminal complaint filed against the man accused of a downtown Rochester mugging indicates the victim nearly lost an eye.

The 60-year-old Michigan man was returning to the Hilton Garden Inn around 11:30 pm Monday when he was confronted by the suspect, who demanded money. While in the lobby area, the man began punching the victim in the head until witnesses intervened. They held the man until officers arrived.

One officer later noted he observed the victim “holding the left side of his face and sitting on the ground next to the front desk. There was blood running from his face.” The officer also noted the victim's “left eye was swollen shut and it looked to be protruding from his skull. From a distance it appeared his eyelid was lacerated and his eyeball may be popping from the socket. There was a visible stream of blood running from his left eye. “

The victim was taken by ambulance to the hospital.

The man accused of assaulting the victim was arraigned on a felony assault charge Tuesday.
