Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The City of Rochester has been awarded a contamination site cleanup grant from the State of Minnesota.

The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development has awarded just under $4 million to assist in the cleanup of 10 contaminated sites that have been approved for redevelopment. Over $850,000 has been directed to Rochester for the Bryk Apartments project just north of the railroad tracks on the west side of North Broadway. The property has previously been used for a dry cleaner operation, automotive repair facilities, and coal storage.

The project calls for a six-story, 165 unit apartment building with one floor of commercial. The developer will be required to provide matching funds.

Albert Lea has been awarded over $1.4 million for the cleanup of a nearly 3 1/2 acre site that has been contaminated by petroleum and other contaminants. The parcel of land, which was previously part of the Farmland Foods meatpacking plant that was destroyed by a fire 20 years ago, is being redeveloped into a 48 unit apartment building.
