On Thursday the Rochester Public Library announced they'll be offering, "long-term borrowing of internet-enabled Chromebooks."

With a $619,000 grant, Library Director Audrey Betcher says the library purchased a total of 1,000 Chromebooks with built-in internet access. “These devices provide crucial internet service to families and individuals who need to connect with online educational resources.”

How long is long-term? The checkouts will last until June 30, 2022. It's part of a program from the Federal Communications Commission to try and lessen the digital divide.

What Are the Requirements?

If you're an Olmsted County resident and you'd like to borrow a Chromebook for a long-term checkout, you need to meet these requirements:

  • Lack sufficient access to the Internet
  • Need a connected device primarily to support educational needs
  • Do not currently receive internet service through another state or federal program

You must bring a photo ID and proof of address if you do not already have a
library card. If you're not sure you meet the requirements, Betcher says to call the library!

“We want to help people get the resources they need...Even if community members do not qualify under this program, we can often find other resources to support people.”

For more information about the Connected Chromebook Program, visit the Library, call the library (507-329-2309), or email the library: reference@rplmn.org
