Dog owners, you’re going to want to take note of a recent recall of several dog food brands – especially if your little buddy is a big eater.

The J.M. Smucker Company just announced a voluntary recall of its Gravy Train, Kibbles ‘N Bits, and Skippy wet dog food products. That’s because a minor ingredient is said to contain low levels of pentobarbital, which is a sedative used to treat insomnia. In large doses, however, it can lead to death. The drug is actually used for euthanizing pets, so it’s pretty scary that even small traces were found.

The company’s memo says that the amount detected was ‘extremely low,’ but still unacceptable to be present at all.

Health officials have stated that pentobarbital, when ingested by animals, can cause drowsiness, dizziness, excitement, loss of balance, nausea, and (in extreme cases) death. Yikes.

It’s good that the company is being proactive in recalling their products, but it’s still freaky that this drug was even in their food to begin with. To read the company’s full memo, click here. And then give your furry pal a hug when you get home today.
