Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The snow that fell on the Rochester area Wednesday was enough to push this month into the list of the 10 snowiest months on record in the city.

The National Weather Service recorded 5.8 inches of snow at the Rochester Airport, which pushed the total for the month to a new record high for February at 27.6 inches. That puts this month at 8th on the list of the top 10 snowiest months in Rochester.

While the record monthly snowfall total set in December 2010 is 41.3 inches, it’s conceivable this month could make it into the top 5 by the end of the month. The National Weather Service has indicated it is tracking a developing storm system that has the potential to dump a half-foot or more of snow on the region this weekend.

Rochester's snowfall total for the entire season is now up to 61.4 inches. That is almost 2-feet above what is considered the city's normal seasonal snowfall total. It also means Rochester is less than 5 inches shy of making the top 10 list for the snowiest winters on record. Considering March is often the snowiest month of the year, perhaps the all-time record of 85.1 inches from the winter of 1996-97 should not be considered out of reach.
