Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) – A Rochester man was charged Friday with attempted 1st-degree murder for attacking his estranged wife in a crowded St Marys Hospital cafeteria.

Two felony assault charges have also been filed against 57-year-old Augustino Nasona, whose bail was set at $400,000.

The attack happened Wednesday morning while the victim was working in the cafeteria.

She told police Nasona “approached her, pulled out a knife and told her, in Sudanese, “Whore, today I am going to kill you” and then stabbed her several times in the chest and back. The woman said she lost consciousness and “her last thought was that she was going to die.”

According to the criminal complaint, a co-worker who tried to intervene says Nasona also slashed the knife at her.

Police say a Mayo Clinic Security Officer “wrapped his arms around Nasona and pinned him to a wall.” Another officer also helped detain Nasona until police arrived. He later told police “ he believed his wife to have been unfaithful in their marriage, and that he went to the hospital that day to fight.”

Investigators have been told the victim suffered damage to her internal organs and she will have to undergo at least one surgery to fully repair them
