When Minnesotans Can See the ‘Impressive’ Total Lunar Eclipse

Get ready for a treat next week, a total lunar eclipse is coming, also called a blood moon. For 58 minutes, the skies will darken a bit more, and the moon will be a coppery red color. In Minnesota, we're in the perfect spot to see the total lunar eclipse.

What is a Total Lunar Eclipse

A total lunar eclipse is when the Earth comes between the sun and the moon. Space.com writes:

With the moon sitting in Earth's shadow, the only light reaching the lunar surface is filtered through Earth's atmosphere, which turns it red, earning it the name blood moon.

When is the Total Lunar Eclipse

You'll want to keep your eye on the sky on the morning of Tuesday, March 3rd, 2026. In Minnesota (and the rest of the central time zone), the total lunar eclipse will start around 5:04 AM.

Then, remember it's going to last about 58 minutes, so it won't end until around 6:02 AM. Plenty of time to take a peek outside and see this incredible blood moon.

A total lunar eclipse iss 100% safe to view with the naked eye, so you don't need any special tools to see the show, like when we had the solar eclipse back in 2017. (By the way, the next time we'll see a total solar eclipse in Minnesota isn't until August 23rd, 2044, according to WCCO.)

You'll need a clear view of the western sky to catch a glimpse of the blood moon. Of course, the skies will need to be clear and not cloudy... Hopefully Mother Nature cooperates!
