Popular Convenience Store at Risk in Minnesota, Company Announces Mass Closures
A big-time convenience store and pharmacy announced today that they plan to close many stores across the country. Minnesota locations are definitely at risk.
This is a place that I've gone to for as long as I can remember. I grew up near one so any medicines we needed, photos that had to be printed, or goodies we wanted to get came from there.

Walgreens Announces Closings
The well-known company Walgreens has made the announcement that they will be closing 1,200 locations across the country. It's crazy to think that such a big company would need to close so many locations, but it sounds like they've been struggling.
Walgreens Has Been Struggling
Walgreens reported a $3 billion loss in the fourth quarter of the 2024 fiscal year, according to Business Insider. They also reported, according to Bring Me the News, a $14.1 billion loss over all of the 2024 fiscal year.

Why is a business that seemed to be booming back in the day doing so poorly?
Walgreens Competition
Walgreens has two big things they're competing against. One is that more and more people are going to places like Amazon, grocery stores, dollar stores, etc. for the convenience store side of their business.
The other piece of competition is there are so many options for getting a prescription filled now that they're choosing to go places other than Walgreens.
Minnesota Walgreens Locations at Risk
The closure of these 1,200 Walgreens locations will take place over the next three years with 500 of them set to close next year.
We have Walgreens locations in 93 different towns across Minnesota. Many of those towns have multiple Walgreens locations. While they haven't released a list of the stores that will be closing but we do know that the focus is on underperforming stores.
I'm not sure which stores are underperforming or if any of them are in Minnesota, but with Walgreens closing 1,200 of their 8,700 US locations, it's hard to imagine that there wouldn't be some closures coming to the Land of 10,000 Lakes.
