British doctors are reporting a major breakthrough in the fight against Multiple Sclerosis. MS is a disease that causes a person's immune system to attack the lining of nerves in the brain and around the spinal cord.

Doctors at Royal Hallamshire Hospital are using chemotherapy to destroy faulty cells then rebuilding the immune system with stem cells harvested from the patient.

They are cautiously optimistic because this new treatment has only been tested on about 20 patients. However, they say there are clear signs of improvement in those that have been treated. Professor John Snowden from the Royal Hallamshire Hospital told the BBC: "The immune system is being reset or rebooted back to a time point before it caused MS. It's clear we have made a big impact on patients' lives, which is gratifying."
