The Bloomington Bomb Squad was called to Rochester Tuesday evening to investigate the discovery of a suspicious suitcase that was left leaning against a large natural gas pipeline near downtown Rochester Tuesday afternoon.

A spokesperson for the Rochester Police Department says officers conducting a visual inspection of the suitcase could not see any wires or other evidence that contains explosives, but it deliberate placement next to the pipeline near the intersection of Civic Center Drive and 6th Avenue Northwest was enough to bring the bomb disposal team to Rochester to deal with it.

The bomb squad inspected the case and sounded the all-clear after determining it was empty.

The situation prompted the evacuation of the Gold Cross Ambulance headquarters, along with several homes and residents of a nearby apartment building for several hours.

It's not known who left the suitcase, or why.
