Burning Restrictions Lifted – But Drought Continues
St. Paul, MN (KROC-AM News) - Most of Minnesota continues to experience drought conditions, but the spring green-up and some recent precipitation has allowed the State Department of Natural Resources to lift burning restrictions statewide. Those restrictions had been in place across most of the northern two- thirds of Minnesota. Officials note local counties, townships and cities could have specific regulations or restrictions still in place.
The recent rains in Minnesota have eased the drought conditions, but not much. The updated Drought Monitor report from the National Weather Service shows 95-percent of the state is still experiencing at least minor drought conditions, while the land area with severe drought conditions in northern and central Minnesota shrank from nearly 40-percent of the state to just under 35-percent. Moderate drought conditions now affect about 57-percent of the state.
The extreme southeast corner of the state continues to be the only part of Minnesota that is not experiencing any drought conditions. While that includes Rochester, an area of northwest Olmsted County is in a moderate drought.
