The Rochester City Council will hold a public hearing at City Hall Monday night on a task force recommendation to increase taxicab rates and make some changes to the current ordinance.

The task force recommends the minimum fare be increased from the current $3.75 to $5 next year. The per mile cost would rise from $2.25 to $3.39 and the wait time would increase by 16 cents per minute. The group recommends future increases be based on inflation. The last rate increase was in 2005. The group also recommends the establishment of a new set fee between the airport and downtown.

Also being recommended is a new permit for all drivers, who would have to complete a required course and meet other conditions.

The council could vote on the recommendations after closing the hearing.
