These new parking rates will make our lives easier but also would cost more if you're parked for long periods of time. Kind of a win-lose situation, unfortunately.

On Wednesday night the city approved the new parking rates and the change will take effect January 1st of 2019.

Here's the rundown of the new rate changes:

Your first hour is free and then after that, you pay $3 for the first hour and $1 per half hour after that, up to $12. After that $12 is hit, you pay $2 per hour up to a daily max of $16.

So to do the math for you, you can park downtown for 6.5 hours for $12, or 8.5 hours for $16.

The city decided to charge per half hour so that way if someone doesn't need the full hour, they don't need to pay for it, which is nice!

The thing that shocked me the most is that they considered taking away free parking after 5 PM on weekdays and all day on the weekends but that was not approved because businesses objected that change. Thank goodness!
