Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) -  A Rochester man who wanted to show off his assault rifle ended up shooting a friend in the stomach.

Police Sgt John Mitchell says the incident happened around 4 a.m. Saturday at a residence along 11th Ave NE near the Boys and Girls Club.

Mitchell says the two men had been out drinking earlier. Mitchell says it’s not clear why the man was pointing the gun at his 24-year-old friend when he fired but the shooting is being treated as an accident.

Mitchell says the victim was conscious when officers arrived and it appeared the injury was non-life threatening.

There is no word on his medical condition.
