Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - Forecasters are telling residents of southern Minnesota to expect significant accumulations of heavy wet snow this weekend.

The National Weather Service has now issued a winter storm warning that covers a large area of southern and east-central Minnesota, along with western and northern Wisconsin from Saturday afternoon into early Sunday morning. The southeast edge of the warning area, which includes the Twin Cities, runs from just west of Albert Lea and through Waseca and Goodhue Counties. The current forecast predicts 6-9 inches of heavy snow in the morning the warning area by Sunday morning.

The Rochester area is currently covered by a winter weather advisory will be in effect from 3 PM Saturday until 6 AM Sunday. The far southeastern corner of the state, with the exception of Houston County, is included in the advisory area. At this point, the National Weather Service is forecasting snowfall totals in the Rochester area will be in the 4-7 inch range.
