Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - Rochester Police say a 23-year-old man was last reported in critical condition at St. Mary's Hospital after undergoing surgery for a gunshot wound to his abdomen. 

Police Captain John Sherwin says the victim was shot during an altercation on 12th avenue southeast just south of 4th street around 5:30 p.m. While officers were responding to reports of a shooting at that site near St. Francis Catholic Church, it was learned the victim had been transported to the Emergency Room at St. Mary's Hospital and was rushed into surgery.

Witnesses at the scene identified the shooting suspect as 22-year-old Gerardo Esquivel Olveda of Stewartville, and an Olmsted County Sheriff's Deputy spotted him entering a residence at Stewarville mobile home park around 6 p.m. Law officers then surrounded the home, and after a brief standoff, Olveda was arrested and transported to the Olmsted County Jail.

Captain Sherwin says he is being held on suspicion of 2nd Degree Attempted Murder, Driveby Shooting and weapons related charges. The investigation is ongoing, but there not expected to be any additional arrests.

Rochester Police are investigating a shooting that has put a man in the hospital.Few details have been released, but police have confirmed a man suffered a gunshot wound to his abdomen around 5:30 Tuesday evening and it's believed the shooting occurred in the vicinity of the intersection of 4th street and 12th avenue southeast near St. Francis Catholic Church.

Officers were sent to the area to investigate reports of gunfire when they learned a man with a gunshot wound was being treated and transported St. Mary's Hospital by the crew of a Gold Cross Ambulance. There's no word on the shooting victim's conditions, but media reports have described his injuries as non-life threatening.

A spokesman says investigators were able to identify a suspect and located him at a mobile home park in Stewartville, where he was arrested about an hour after the shooting was reported.

Officials say additional information will be released Wednesday morning.
