Nearly 40% of Americans are setting a New Year's resolution this year, but only 9% will accomplish their goals, according to Drive Research.  Weight loss ranks as the most searched-for resolution in America on Google, with "eating healthier" and "exercising" following closely behind.

Why Do People Make New Year's Resolutions?

A lot of people set their sights on achieving fitness and weight loss goals each year, but other New Year's resolutions include saving more money, learning something new, or spending more time with friends and family.

When you decide what your goal is going to be you should write it down along with the steps that outline how you're going to succeed. Setting a goal provides motivation, and the identified steps act as a roadmap for success.

The Most Searched New Year's Resolutions

To identify popular resolutions in each state, USA Credit Unions studied Google Trends.

Weight loss emerged as the most searched resolution in the United States, topping the list in 13 out of 50 states, including Iowa. "Eating healthier" led in six states, while "exercising" claimed the top spot in four states.

The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota says the "foundation of successful weight loss remains a healthy, calorie-controlled diet combined with increased physical activity" and offers 6 strategies for weight loss success.
