How would you react if you saw a trapped animal in a random car?

After last weekends heat wave, I got to thinking that it's that time of year when pet owners think it's OK to leave their animals in hot vehicles while they quickly run some errands.

Personally, I can't believe people leave their animals in cars like this at all?  We see and hear about tragic stories all the time how pets die due to heat exhaustion.  It happens way too often.

You always hear the excuses - "I wasn't gone that long", "But I left the windows cracked, I thought they'd be fine", and "I didn't think it was that hot out".  Unacceptable.

Don't leave your pets alone in a hot vehicle on a hot day.  I mean, this is just common sense, right?  Right?!  I guess not...

Now, it's not certain how long this dog in the video was trapped in the car, but you can hear the man who smashes the window say he thinks it was trapped for 45 minutes.  Either way, in my opinion, this man saved this dog:

Last week, a news anchor out of Denver, Colorado wanted to do the same thing to a dog he saw was in distress in a parking lot, but opted not to - but he wishes he had.

You can watch his reaction to what the dog's owner had to say to him in the story below...

Look, I'm not trying to pick a fight or start an argument with pet owners.  I get it, we all have busy lives and sometimes you gotta take your pets with you to get things done.  But all I'm asking you to do is be smart about it.

But should any of us see an animal in distress like the two dogs above, you should first try to find the owner first before you start smashing any windows.  If you can't find the owner then call the police.

If you end up breaking a window, then you would be liable for the damages.  Police and Firemen are protected from being held liable for damaging windows in this situation.  I also think that it's a ticket-able offense to leave your car running while your not in it depending on the state you're in.

Bottom line: Love and treat your pets with respect this summer, and be mindful of the heat when bringing them along while running errands.  It's just the right thing to do :)
