Amazing Rochester Basketball Standout Set to Play in NBA This Fall
He was an incredible athlete when he played for John Marshall High School in Rochester and now he'll be shooting hoops in the NBA.
Shout-out to Rochester John Marshall High School alum, Matthew Hurt, who despite not being drafted during the National Basketball Association (NBA) just signed a two-year contract to play professional basketball for the Houston Rockets. (I guess it makes sense, seeing as John Marshall High School in Rochester is ALSO the home of the Rockets, right?)
That exciting news was announced Friday night by Duke University's basketball team, where Hurt played for two seasons before declaring for the NBA draft earlier this year. It's only the latest stop on Hurt's incredible journey to the top of the basketball world.
If you followed high school basketball during the time Hurt played for John Marshall, you already know he was a standout. In fact, according to KSTP-TV, during his six years on the varsity squad at JM, Hurt Hurt scored more than 3,000 points, scoring over 1,000 in his senior year alone.
And when Hurt was named Mr. Basketball back in 2019, he was the first player from Rochester to ever win the prestigious award. (The 'Mr. Basketball' award was established in 1975 and is given to the player chosen by a select committee as the best high school boys' basketball senior in the state of Minnesota.)
After being recruited by several big-name college programs, Hurt committed to Duke University in 2019 where he went on to become the Atlantic Athletic Conference's top scorer during his sophomore year. And now, he'll be lacing up the sneakers and trying to sink some three-pointers for the Rockets down in Houston. (It was interesting to note that THIS Duke Basketball Report story says Hurt turned down an offer from the home state Timberwolves to take the Rockets' offer. Hmmm.)
