It's been standing in Minnesota's Med City for nearly 100 years, but it'll meet with the wrecking ball starting Monday.

The fact that there's yet another construction project in Rochester isn't a news bulletin, what with the DMC initiative, right? There are cranes and orange barrels all over the downtown area. And starting today (Monday, July 8th), there'll be one more construction project-- but this one's taking DOWN a building that's been standing for nearly a century.

And that building-- this time-- is the Traveler's Hotel, right there on Second Street Southwest in Rochester. As Jeff Kiger noted in this Post Bulletin story, demolition is set to start today on the building that closed three years ago.

The story noted that Mayo Clinic bought the property back in 2001 and ran it as the Traveler's Hotel until it closed in 2016, saying then that the building needed repairs and renovation that were too expensive to keep it open. Its exact history isn't quite clear, but the story says it likely first opened as a hotel back in 1918 or 1920-- nearly 100 years ago!

Earlier this year, there was an attempt to get the building historic landmark status under Rochester's heritage preservation ordinance, but that was voted down back in April. So, the familiar white and blue building has a date with the wrecking ball starting today. (That project is expected to last until early August.) And, so far, there's no word on what might take its place there on one of Rochester's busiest streets.
