Baby Sloth at the Como Zoo

The Como Zoo shared on Facebook that the baby sloth was born as part of "an Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Species Survival Plan (SSP) breeding recommendation".

Basically, this baby sloth will help with keeping a "genetically diverse, demographically varied, and biologically sound population" of the Hoffman's Two-Toed Sloth.

The baby sloth and mom are back out in their enclosure now, which means we can go visit them and see the little guy (or girl, they didn't specify) in action! Albeit, slow action.

Fun fact about just how slow these guys are, according to Animalia, the Hoffman's two-toed sloth move "typically at around 0.14 m/s (0.46 ft/s), although they can move up to 50% faster when excited." That's comically slow!

Another fun fact related to just how slow they move, in the wild, the Hoffman's Two-Toed Sloth will typically only travel between an average of 25 trees in their lifetime, which can be up to 20 years in the wild, according to Zoo Atlanta.

So if you're planning to go visit the little baby sloth, you may want to plan to sit by their enclosure for a while to see anything happen or to even catch a glimpse of the baby.
