St. Paul, MN (KROC-AM News) - The number of new COVID-19 deaths reported today by the Minnesota Department of Health was the lowest single-day total in the state in the past 2 weeks.

State health officials say Minnesota experienced 9 coronavirus related deaths yesterday, which raised the overall total from the pandemic to 731. The daily count marked the first time since May 4th the state has reported fewer than 10 deaths.

Just over 6000 tests for the new viral illness were conducted statewide on Sunday and those tests detected just over 700 new confirmed COVID-19 cases. The testing total is now over 156,600 and the total number of confirmed cases of the infection is above 16,300. 13 of the new cases reported today were in Olmsted County.

The daily update also indicates the total number of people currently hospitalized because of the coronavirus illness has been fairly steady at around 500 for the past week. At the same time, the number of ICU beds used by COVID-19 patients has edged up slightly during the past week and is currently at 229 statewide.
