Have You Helped ‘Reveal the Red’ in Rochester?
Thanks to all our snow, February in Minnesota is usually pretty white but two groups are urging you to reveal the red here in Rochester.
Normally, it's the brave men and women of the Rochester Fire Department who are the ones helping others. But now, they're asking for your help... to 'reveal the red' around Rochester. As in, those red fire hydrants that could be buried under the new snow we got last weekend and again on Monday.
Rochester Public Utilities is also stepping in and urging you to help 'reveal the red' by shoveling around and digging out any red fire hydrants that could be located under the snowbank near your house.
Of course, we all know how important it is to keep those hydrants easy to get to in case there's an emergency. According to this ABC-6 story, even a few minutes it might take firefighters to dig out a buried hydrant could be critical. The story noted that a fire can double in size every minute, and in a recent drill, it took firefighters a full three minutes to dig out a hydrant buried in the snow.
In a post on their Facebook page, RPU says once you've cleared the snow away from 'your' fire hydrant, 'call RPU at 280.1500 and we will come by and put a flag on it to make it more visible for emergency crews,' the post noted.
