How to Own a Lighthouse in Duluth for Free
If you're looking for a change, this opportunity to own a Minnesota lighthouse might be just the thing you need. Plus, it's free.
The Duluth Harbor North Pier Light, aka the white lighthouse on the pier at the end of Canal Park, is available to the right taker. The US Coast Guard is offloading a handful of lighthouses they no longer need, and this iconic Minnesota landmark is one of them.
Pursuant to the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act of 2000, 4 U.S.C. § 305102 et. seq (NHLPA), this light station is being made available at no cost to eligible entities defined as federal agencies, state and local agencies, non-profit corporations, educational agencies, or community development organizations, for education, park, recreation, cultural, or historic preservation purposes.
This notice was posted on May 7th, 2021, and anyone interested in this structure needs to submit an application by July 7th.
The lighthouse itself was built in 1910, and stands 43 feet tall on a concrete base. The lighthouse cannot be used for commercial activities unless approved by the Secretary of the Interior. The goal is for it to be used for education, park, recreation, cultural, or historic preservation purposes. The fact sheet also shared that lead-based paint or asbestos-containing material may be present.
I think this is such a cool opportunity for a local non-profit to create something amazing in canal park, and I can't wait to see what moves into the structure. If you are someone who is interested in it, get all the information on this super cool lighthouse here.
